I am contemplating buying a 1961 Richardson 40' aluminum planked, on aluminum frames project boat. I have previously owned numerous wood and glass boats but have no experience or knowledge regarding aluminum. The hull and frames appear sound. The wood superstructure needs repair.

My question is this:

Are there any inherent pitfalls regarding aluminum planked boats.Eg. structural / corrosion / electrolysis / tankage etc. etc.

Any information will be much appreciated.

Thanks - Ken Day

Never heard of an alumnium planked boat. You might post the same question over on the project boats section & see if anyone over there knows.

How is it fastened? Rivets? Welding?

Usually don't come across recreational aluminum cruisers over 25'

Re: Fastened

1. The bottom is 3 pieces of 3/16" plate bolted through frames with stainless bolts, washers and nuts.
2. Sides are 6" x 20' to 40' x 1/8" aluminum planks. They are laid up edge to edge with an aluminium backing strip and sealant on the inside. They are attached to frames with self drilling / tapping stainless screws.
3. Transom is one piece plate. Attached to frames with self drilling / tapping screws.
4. Hull was manufactured by A.V. Roe Aircraft Co. in Canada and shipped to New York for finishing by Richardson

I have some pictures I took yesterday that I'll post when I figure out how.

Yours - Ken Day

It may be an unusual configuration, but your question about corrosion should be easy to answer.

The boat has had 40+ years of use. Any corrosive issues should be visible. If the combination of aluminum, stainless steel, and salt water has not produced obvious damage by now, you're probably not going to have much if you buy it.
