Hello All,

I just bought a boat and the trailers brake looked the right wheel up when I was bringing the trailer around to get the boat out of the water. I went to take the tire off but the wheel magically unlocked. But when I got home, the rim was hot after 15 miles.

I don't know what kind of trailer I have, can you help?

Heres a few pictures of her. Also it looks like the trailer has a bolt that when removed, the trailer tilts, What is this for?

BTW: The title say's year ... 72 and make ... SHO

Thanks
Bill

That is an OLD Atwood brake set up. I can just imagine what the drums look like. You need to pull the wheels and have a look in there. I am amazed that surge unit still works.

Why, due to the age?

Yep...lets the trailer tilt. I suggest you don't use that feature of the trailer.

Yep. You should look at it every few years anyway so I am sure they are overdue. You need to see what is working and what is not with this brake system.

Without opening the drum up, from the outside, it looks ok, but you never know. I will be servicing both but before I do, I need to know what I have and were do I get parts from.

Picture of the inside of the wheel.

Whats the tilt trailer function used for?

Looking from the outside means absolutely nothing.

The wheel cylinders may be impossible to get for those old brakes. Kinda depends on if they have been updated.

Some used to use tilt trailers to aide in launching and retreival. It is extremely dangerous as the trailer can slam down from the tilted position at any time.

Where are you located?

Live in Chatsworth and work in El Segundo. I know the surge actuater that you have very well. Was on my family's first boat that was sold in 1975.

Hello Bruce,

Sounds like your the guy I need to talk to. Do you know what model my Attwood set up is? I see that (some) of the parts look like they are from TITAN MODEL 6 (the actuator) and cap but thats it.

Any info would help

BTW .. Do you take the 101 or the 5 for your commute?

Thanks
Bill
