I have two old mercruiser manuals, and the stern drive one states for my engine a 351, I need a gear ratio of 1.33 to 1. I bought one recently that was 1.5 to 1, couldn't find 1.33, thinking that I could use a larger pitch to help gear down the drive. Will this work, and most importantly will it not put to much strain on the engine and drive.

If the correct rpm at WOT are achieved then no problem.

C............

Re: right gear ratio

in many cases at high altitudes drives are regeared to a steeper gear ratio to lighten the load on the motor.

That 1.33/1 ratio gear set is about as common as Hen's Teeth...........

The 1.50/1 will work Just Fine............

Re: right gear ratio

I didn't even know they production made 1.33/1 drives. Is this a 351 Winsor or Cleveland? If “W” I had one built up pretty good (hi H.P.) a couple years back and a 1.5/1 drive worked fine.

Thanks for the replies, and it is a winsor. I found one drive that had the 1.33 ratio, but it looked so bad that even if the gears where still good didn't know if I would use them.
