what height should the prop shaft be in relation to the bottom of the transom? As it is set up now, the prop shaft is about three inches below the bottom of the boat. Is this too high and will it cavitate? Thanks in advance, Allen

The cavitation plate or ventilation plate, depending on what you want to call it should be close to level with the bottom of the boat

Hi Rockytop,

You don't say what motor you're running, but there is usually some 6 to 9 inches between the AV plate and the propshaft. If that's true in your case, then your AV plate will be a little high.

Theory says that the AV plate needs to be level with or a little above the hull bottom at centreline. I've been on boats that have performed well outside this range, but it's a good starting point.

Does your prop ventilate easily now - say in turns? If so, try dropping the motor down a little, and experiment.
