It would be interesting to know what the skipper was thinking. Did he think "I can make it", or maybe he didn't know the ferry was there at all, maybe he wasn't looking forward, or maybe the person at the tiller wasn't experienced at all (here, hold this while I go below and pee).

I wouldn't be a bit surprised the the person at the tiller had no idea what they were doing, because its kind of hard to miss a ferry that size. (actually, they didn't miss it at all, did they)
