when installing a water pump impeller in the housing, the ends of the pump have a curve in them. my question is , which direction should they be going when looking down from the top? the motor is a 1975 115 johnson. when removing the impeller the vanes were going both directions. also what to use as a pre lube for the pump for first time run.

Looking down at it from the end of the driveshaft, turn the driveshaft clockwise while putting the housing on. The engine spins the driveshaft clockwise so this should be their 'natural' position.
No pre-lube for the pump. Just make sure it's in water. Do lube the driveshaft splines though - just don't go overboard with the grease. And put sealant on the threads of all screws exposed to the elements so that they come out again next time.

I alway's use some type of lubricant when assembling the pump, it makes turning the impellor into the housing much easier. Vasoline, or any light oil will work fine. Put the impellor inro the pump housing first, then lower it down the drive shaft, and mate it up with the impellor drive key. This will avoid the impellor snagging the O-ring seal at the bottom of the pump housing, and pulling it out of place.

i always use a little gearcase oil that i lube inside the impeller housing so it will slide easyer with pushing on the housing while rotating
the driveshaft.
otherwise it doesnt serve any other purpose to lube anything.

if you have a little key or wedge that holds the impellor inplace against the driveshaft i always use a little grease to stick it on the shaft and slide the impellor over it.
dont use to much grease there because it might end up clogging somewhere.

goodluck

reeldutch
