Is there any point to buying this tool for a carbureted 5.7l 2001 Mercruiser with Thunderbold V ignition? I'm interested in getting the hourmeter data off the engine but if that is the only utility for it I won't waste my money
Nothing else it can do. A trip to a dealer with the scan tool and the proper connector would be a lot cheaper. But if the module was change, it means nothing.
I wrote to one of the local dealers asking if they had the scanner to read the hours on my engine and this is the reply that I got:
Hi Randy thanks for enquiring. The ignition module on your engine does not record the engine hours it controls ignition only. we do however have all the diagnostic tools to read hours and codes from engines with an ECM or PCM (EFI and MPI engines).
Sorry I cannot help you.
regards
Is this correct? Does the ingition module for the TB-V not record engine hours?? I was under the impression from the Rinda site that it does.
If I recall correctly, the OEM Scan tools do not read the TB5 module, only the Rinda scan tool. If they aren't familiar with Rinda tools, they wouldn't know about it.
