'96 V6 2.5L 200hp. Have read that standard acceptable end gap is .005" per inch of bore. My bore is 3.500" so acceptable should be .0175" end gap. OK. What should be considered minimum gap and maximum gap for 3.500 bore? Of course, end gap being measured w/ring in bore and square - top, middle and bottom.
Any help greatly appreciated.

:)

Re: Ring end gap clearance

We used to use .007 to .017" as standard. anymore .007 is considered a tad on the tight side with todays fuel, but acceptable.

With todays ring material and combustion temps we are more concerned about the rings being too close and touching. Some rings have a clearance of .030 or more. It depends on the ring design and ring material.

Its always a good idea to check the ring gap as a cross check to bore size (to avouid a .020 labled bore when its actually a .030 -- it happens) and to make sure the right rings are in the package (that happens too). But its pretty rare, if ever, to have to "size" a ring these days.

Good luck!

They should be good to go as is. I still put each one in just for the other reasons I mentioned. I dont really measure them but you'll see right away if something doesnt look right.

Let us know how you make out. Good luck!
