What is the space limit on the surfaces anyways? If I put a straight edge across the surface is it ok if a piece of paper can slide under the straight edge in spots? I am guessing that they won't be 100% perfect and that is one reason for a gasket.....

Also why do they say NOT to paint gasket surfaces? However they also say on the ceramic coated ones not to take the EDP plating off the gasket surface.

Re: riser & spacer surface space limit

what are you using for a straightedge??? a yardstick or an actual machined straightedge (which are like 80 bucks for a 2 footer)
I don't think there is a spec per say. But most machined flat surfaces are something like .005

Ayuh,.....

Machined Flat surfaces are suppoed to be,.............................................. Flat......

If you want to leave it up to the Gasket holding up,... Have at it.....

Somewhere here lately,...
There's a thread started by myself explaining the Issues I found with GLM manifolds,.....
Mine are out being Machined now.....

The bottom line is,

If you think the surfaces are not flat, your BEST BET is to replace them! (we're talking about $500 for a complete after-market kit)

Or, if you're absolutely sure that they're in good condition, take them to a machine shop and have them chuck'em up on a vertical mill and make them flat.

They'll probably only need to take 5-10 thousandths of an inch off each surface to clean them up.

The alternative is to have it leaking after every shutdown and have a hydro-lock every time you try to start it!! Or let it sit for a winter and have water running back into open exhaust valves (like I did)

Cheers,

Rick

For what's worth;
Volvo specs are 0.1 mm flatness-with no gasket sealing compound to be used. Max material that can be removed is 0.25 mm.
I used a six inch machinist rule and a feeler guage to check it.

0.1mm converts to 0.0039 inch... my guess was .005.... just goes to show ya that the metric system is better!!! it's a tighter fit and easier to read.
