Riser spacers

Two years ago I hydro-locked my motor, I, with the help of this forum, was able to diagnose and resolve the immediate problem, with no after effects. I think the problem at that time was created by two things, a 454 in a boat that was designed for a 350, and to many bodies aft. Half dozen teenagers, swim platform, duh. Anyway, I am thinking that I could add the 3" spacers that are available in a kit and that would give me a little more room, so this problem won't happen again. My question is, and I'm asking because the boat's under 6" of snow, and it's about 6 below zero, not including chill factor. The riser spacer takes care of the front, what about at the back side, at the Y-pipe? Will I be able to massage all the fittings enough to make up the 3", or do I have to get some sort of spacers for that connection? I have searched, but I find no parts for that connection. I want to do this mod so I can have a season without being paranoid about hydro-locking. Any ideas?

Re: Riser spacers

the extensions are a good idea if you have room under the engine box.
without any more information your exaust connections cannot be speculated on.
many many companies marinized the 454 chevrolet.

Re: Riser spacers

Sorry, 1987 Sea Ray 210 Monaco, supposed to be factory equiped with Mercruiser 350, 260 hp, original owner had 454 installed. Clean installation, just a heckuva lot heavier. It appears the 3" would work without to much trouble, if I went with the 6", I would have to re-work the doghouse. After the hydro-lock I replace the exhaust shutters, so I 've been back there, I just can't remember if there was enough tolerance to accept a 3" rise at the manifold. Ideas?

Re: Riser spacers

this is a guess, but instead of the "pleated" exhaust couplers, use a section of 4" exhaust hose. it may cause a little vibration as the are not as flexible.

Re: Riser spacers

whats the down angle on your current risers and do your Y pipes terminate straight up or is it a solid casting from the transom to the hose connection between the riser and the y pipe?
here is where good digital pics help :)

Re: Riser spacers

I guess I'll just have to wait until I can get the tarps of her, I remember that when I did the shutters, off the mainfold was the riser elbow, then a rubber coupling, about 6" long w/ 4 SS clamps, to a cast 90 ell, then another rubber coupler/clamps, then the Y-pipe. Hopefully we'll get some warm weather soon and I can take a look, and post back. Thanks.

Re: Riser spacers

with that set up I believe you have the 0* angle risers. they make a rubber joint that is 3" and 6" longer to aid in this. also if you have the rubber coupler that has the Rib between the riser and the 90* all you need is 3" longer exhaust hoses between the 90's and the Y pipe.
the coupler with the ridge is to allow motion without placing a strain on the Y pipe or hose. the engine is mounted on rubber and isolated from the shield assy, the shield is mounted on the transom and the Y pipe ridgidly fixed to the shield. you really need something to relieve the strain from the riser to the Y.
other than that your home free.

Just a note. The business that supports this great forum sells this stuff to. If you enjoy this forum as much as I do, you need to throw some business their way.

Re: Riser spacers

someplace between the Y and the riser you have to have a strain relief, that was the intent of the original coupler with the bubble in the middle.
otherwise any motion between the transom sheild and the riser is a strain on the Y pipe and hose.

Re: Riser spacers

Thanks rodbolt, Eddie, I will check the sponsors of this forum, I was not trying to promote one over another. I just wanted to make sure I was on the right track. I do enjoy this forum and all the expertise that it provides. Rodbolt, thanks for the the info, I will make sure that I get the same strain relief between the Y and riser. I will know more in a few weeks hopefully, if the crappy weather gives up. Will keep you all posted!
