Just going to pick up my marine grade 3/4 plywood and epoxy resin for my new floor.

I'm new to pop riveting and was wondering the grip length for going through the 3/4 inch plywood and into the aluminum backing strips. I'm thinking 3/16 inch closed end blind aluminum pop rivets but am not sure of the grip length needed.

I'll post picks of the restoration along the way. I'm also going to strip it and give it a custom paint job along with new interior and boat top.

I'm also ordering this water cleanup aircraft stripper efs-2500 http://www.m-tc.com/efs2500_home.htm The pictures of planes being stripped and the results are wild.

Welcome to iboats!

Another Starcraft owner for our "fleet" of Starcrafts here!! :D

1" grip range will work. 3/4 through the wood and a 1/4 to grab the bracket.

Oven cleaner has been working for many as a stripper.

Welcome to the Starcraft Flotilla. You'll feel right at home here.

I went the oven cleaner route for the inside of my hull. It worked pretty well - though it was a rather unsavory task. If you've already got the aircraft stripping material on the way, I'd say stick with it. Keep us posted on how it works.

Oh, and what Ezmobee said: show us some pictures. We like pictures.

This board is paying off already. I'll see where I can dig up some rivets with a 1 inch grip online tonight. There is also some aircraft parts suppliers near my work so I may try there tomorrow depending on what I can find.

Hey Ezmobee...your blue metallic deck and restore pics inspired me from about 2 months ago to pick up a boat and redo it. There is nothing like the hulls on these boats...they've got good bones so to speak. With a good paint job and redo of the interior and trailer it will outlast most anything out there. I'm sure my 3 boys will be using it decades from now as well.

I drove 19 hours straight on a whim to pick it up in Minnesota and 24 hours on the way back. Got detoured due to flooding by Minot North Dakota but that only added about an hour to the trip. I was seeing snakes by the end of that road trip.

It's a 1977 with the 140 inboard. The trailer is made by the Snow Company and seems like it's as solid as an old Soviet tank. The deck is also pretty solid but has never been covered as far as I can tell. The engine runs like a top and is mechanically sound as I bought it off a boat mechanic. There are some minor dings in the hull that need to be dollied out and the wiring is unsightly but it's going to get gutted and tricked out anyway. The seats are spent but I'm not sitting where some else's sweaty *** has been anyway so it'll be all new or the wife will not go anywhere near it. Not sure if that is a negative or not but she's hot so that's got it's pluses as well. :)

There is a company called C+M upholstery here in Edmonton Alberta that will build me a custom boat top and cover. I couldn't really find anyone online that had pre-built tops.

I tend to overdo when I build something so if I go overboard at some point let me know.

Everyone here is as helpful as hell so I may be shipping some booze out for all your help and contributions...if I don't get to it first. I'm amazed at the incredible work you all do on your boats so a big thumbs up there.

I'll post picks later tonight once I can get an album together. They are phone pics but better than a hand drawn facsimile.

Hey, that's a nice looking boat there :D

See if you can find these large head rivets. I've seen them used in boats to secure the decking. The larger head won't tear through the deck material as easy as a normal sized rivet.

I found the large head rivets... There are 5 in the picture. I've had a couple beers so that's not bad for this test. :)

Thanks man. I'll see what I can dig up. If I can dig up any original manuals, wiring diagrams or any cool stuff for the boat I'll be the first to share as well.

FYI, if you cant get the big head rivets, you can use a washer under the head, just add the thickness of the washer into your formula.............and be sure to use the same material of the washer as your rivet to reduce any kind of corrosion.......

you want to be somewhat close to this measurement to ensure proper tightening of the rivet. The proper length of rivet is an important part of the repair. If the rivet is too long, the formed head will be too large, or the rivet may bend or be forced between the sheets being riveted. If the rivet is too short, the formed head will be too small or the riveted material will be damaged. The length of the rivet should equal the sum of the thickness of the metal plus 1 1/2 times the diameter of the rivet.

hope it helps

Well the gunwall supports are off and so is the gas tank and all that disgusting carpet.

I drilled out the rivet heads and and going to try ply some plywood out tomorrow. It's got that pour in foam stuck to the plywood pretty good. Any tips on prying the plwood out? I've got a couple of thin plybars ready to go.

How about getting all that foam out?

Boy that is a nice looking one.
Looks like you've got a good boat and trailer there to restore.
It will be fun to watch.

I'm a Canadian but God bless America. There is no threat of the Chinese taking over the world just yet as for the life of them they cannot make a decent drill bit. I broke about 6 of them trying to drill out the rivets. I switched over to my good drill bits (made in the usa) and did almost the whole deck in half the time. :)

I used 2 pry bars and inched my way along and the plywood popped right up off the foam.

I'll post some updated pics tomorow. I also pulled out the center part of the console.

A tip for removing rivets for anyone out there. If the nib of the rivet is poking up, keeping you from getting a drill bit in there, give the rivet a tap with a hammer to knock the nib down and it will be much easier to drill it out.

Thanks for the rivet tip... I picked them up earlier this week and that's exactly where they came from :)
