I am replacing my transom on my starcraft and it has a steel plate that goes up and over the transom where the motor sits. I need to remove that so the wood transom can be removed. It's riveted in. I have been trying to drill out the rivets with a 7/16 titanium drill bit. It's not working well. Any suggestions?

STEEL??? On your tin boat, good lord what people do to boats. I'm guessing they used solid steel rivets too, those suckers are hard as diamonds. Sounds like your trying to use too large of bit. Try using a 3/16ths or even 5/32nds pilot point bit first and go up in size from there.

Sounds like you may have some stainless steel rivets there.

Drop down to a 1/4" bit and drill slowly, dip your bit in water frequently to keep it cool.

Just drill the heads of the rivets off, when the head comes off use a center punch, nail set, or a 16d nail to drive the stem of the rivet out the other side.
