Along with my launch trailer to be used at camping sites, I also will want a road trailer. Many options in used market. Will need to modify to fit boat properly. Prefer galvanized, but painted will work just as well.
Questions:
Is a 3500# 18' trailer too big, too heavy duty, for this SIB? It is 18' overall and 74" between fenders. I found one and it is a good base to start with....pics below.
Since there will only be about 150# on the trailer (maybe 300# if I add a bow storage box and outboard carrier with outboard), I thought that it would ride pretty stiff and bounce excessively since the springs are rated at approx. 3500#. It is long/wide enough that boat can sit between fenders in stead of on top and not have any rear tube overhang ( I use a small 5hp OB and it will not ride on transom; it will ride in back of truck or on an outboard carrier built on trailer). This will keep boat lower on trailer and make launching/retrieving easier in terms of not having to back into water very deep.
Thoughts?
Is a smaller, shorter, lighter trailer better? If so, why?
