Can a roaring from the outdrive on a SX cobra be the U-joints or does it definantly mean the gimbal bearing is going out?

Could be both, pull the drive and check.

Re: Roar from outdrive when turning

Ok I pulled the drive nothing wrong I could see. Gimbal bearing smooth as silk, no slack in u-joints. I did however get 8 or 9 pumps of grease per u-joint zert before it was visible coming from the seal on the caps. Could the joints being low on grease cause a slight vibration or a kinda roaring sound when turning. Everything considered the bout works great. The boat Has as made this sound when turning since I got it in July of 2010. I had never had a sterndrive Volvo before so just thought it is just how it sounds. The only reason I have ever questioned it is things I have read in the iboats forums. I think the forums are great. Wish I had thought of it long ago. Please someone tell if the u-joints being dry could have caused my noise. I plan to take it to a mechanic tomorrow and let him check the bearings while I have it Apart. He will look at it for free.
