My Mercruiser 888 still has the original 2bbl Rochester carb. It needs rebuilding as it didn't get done when the engine was rebuilt last season. I have never tried to overhaul a carb, but will tackle just about anything. How hard is it to rebuild this thing? I have a Clymer and it doesn't look too bad, but I am a bit intimidated by the fine adjustments.

Not much problem at all. I did a rochester 4bbl on my ski boat and a 2bbl on my sea ray. Take your time, I used a mercruiser factory manual which had it step by step. I bought my rebuild kit at NAPA,they have a large marine selection. The napa kit had instructions and a guage to set the float level.Good luck.

A good word of advice :)

Use a cookie sheet when you dis-assemble the carb. It will prevent little pats from rolling away.

Keep in mind when you purchase a "rebuild kit" it might come with allot of parts for other model carbs so just take it slowly.

Good luck.

Bob

Use the float height in your book vice the ones that come with the re-build kit. The ones in the kit were totally differnet and mine didnt run with them. I just reset it but I have to put the carb back on and see.

as long as you go by the BOOK and take your time, you will be fine. a 2-bbl rochester is not complicated and doesn't have too many parts to replace on it. I rebuilt mine and runs great and I am a computer engineer

if you have problems ask!

One tip that drove me crazy for hours. Make sure that the little steel ball that goes in the bottom of the pump well in the float bowl gets back where it belongs. I thought i had it there but it somehow missed. Does not work real well without it.
