I am in the process of rebuilding a Rochester card from my 89' Four Winns with a 4.3L OMC. The carb is a 2 barrell and when i was taking it apart i noticed that in the diagram that came with the rebuild kit as well as the one in my repair manual both showed a check ball inside the main body of the carb below the power plunger but there was nothing inside mine. The rebuild kit came with two check balls- one steel and one aluminum. one ball goes into a hole on the front with a spring above it and a T-shaped of metal to hold it in place. That ball was correct and there but i still have an aliminum one from the kit but it is too big to go into the hole below the power plunger. Is that a ball that is needed and if so where can i get it?

It's not Steel ball #62 shown on that diagram. The first link you posted to another post talks about the right ball but the diagram for the mercarb does not have it. Do you have any diagrams for rochesters or know where i can get one?

Your picture look right but the ball i have it too big to fit into the hole in the bottom below the accelerator pump. There was a retaining clip inside the bottom when i took the carb apart but no check ball. It would appear that there should be a ball inside the hole in the bottom with the retaining clip to keep the ball from coming out and moving but i cant put the check ball in the hole and fit the retaining clip also. I will attach pictures to explaine myself as soon as possible.

I am attaching a picture of the check ball in the hole below the pump spring with the retaining clip on it. You cant see it but the ball sits about 1/8" above the bottom the the pump cylinder. Is this correct or should the ball fit inside the hole completly (right now the ball is bigger than the hole).

You're right--that diagram doesn't show a check ball. It's possible that your carb doesn't need it. You could try verifying that the accelerator pump works. You can do that without reassembling the carb, by removing the pump plunger from the activating arm, filling the pump reservoir with gas, and pushing it by hand. There should be a good stream of fuel at the venturi cluster. If it takes a check ball, I don't think there's any way the accelerator pump will work without one.

Are you sure the ball isn't already in there? It falls below the level of the bottom of the pump reservoir and can be hard to see if you don't know what you're looking for.

There was a retaining clip when i took it apart so i am pretty sure that there is supposed to be a check ball. I am also pretty sure that there is not one in there allready unless its all the way under at the bottom of the U - shaped passage and it wont move. I will try the pump today when i get home and see if it works. If i do need a check ball then where can i buy one?

For some reason i cannot attach pictures but i will try to attach a pdf of the instrustions that came with the carb rebuild kit. The ball i am talking about is #49 and the carb did have retaining clip #48 so that makes me think that it is supposed to have the ball because on the models that dont have or need the ball they also dont have the clip

I've got one. The kits I've purchased had 2 aluminum balls...one large and one small. Send me an e-mail with your address if you want me to mail it to you.

The carb rebuild kit that came for my carb has adjustment specs for 3 differnt V6 engines. The are listed as:
6 CYL 225" ENG.
6 CYL 232" ENG.
6 CYL 250" ENG.
What one do i use for my 4.3L OMC Cobra? Is there ay way to find out?

I rebuilt my carb yesterday and the check ball under the pump wasn't visible because it was completly covered and glued in place with old fuel residue.

Re: Rochester Carb Check Ball Missing

i have checked for mine but after a couple of days in the dip the inside is very clean and i cannot see anything. My father in law told me about a rochester carb like mine that he had a problem with the accelerator pump and when he took it apart he found that the check ball was all the way down in the hole at the bottom of the U-shape and could not be seen and he could not even get it out with compressed air. eventully he drilled a small hole under where the ball was stuck and removed it that way and then filled in the hole.
