Rochester Quadrajet choke questions

I'm starting to think that I inherited the boat of Frankenstein! My latest issue is with the carburetor, The boat is a 1979 SRV240. The engine is a 5.7L MerCruiser. The PO put a new Rochester Quadrajet on the boat. The first issue I came across was he used and apparently reused the gaskets several times, he also had two gaskets on top of each other that were not the same and actually one of them created a space causing a intake leak he decided was best fixed with some kind of rubber cement. Easy fix one new gasket....the next issue is with the choke. I noticed that the choke lever on the carb was just flapping in the breeze, not attached to anything. I can see where a divorce choke of some sort was maybe used in the past (unused holes in the intake for screws) but no signs of it now. I assume my options are divorce choke kit, or a electric choke. I'm I on the right track? Which fix is better?

Thanks

First verify the "new" carb is marine rated.

Choke, get whichever you find first and get out on the water.

Almost forgot, WELCOME ABOARD!!

Re: Rochester Quadrajet choke questions

I have actually been at the boating thing for many years with a 28' Luhrs. The Luhrs has a 10' beam and isn't exactly trailer friendly. Hoping to use this boat in different lakes in the area. This boat is my first IO and man has it been an experience. Havasuboatman your right about the wallet thing:eek: New transom, engine mounts, stringers. its been a fun project that I can finally see the end of the tunnel. This is a great site and has provided me with tons of information to help through the entire process. I told my wife the other day If I ever get crazy and buy a new boat I think I will go back to outboard. Thanks again for your help and comments.

Re: Rochester Quadrajet choke questions

Here in the south I have been told and read that Chokes are not really needed. I wire tied mine so it stays wide open or you could take the choke plates off just dont drop a screw down the throat.

But the parts you are in the need of if you want to get the divorced choke working are: Diagram

Parts 34 - 38
Or convert it to Electric Choke not sure on parts or price
