Last October my brother and I were up at Eagle Lake, Ca. fishing for monster trout. We've been fishing the lake at least 3 times a year for 30 years now so we know it pretty well.
We head on down the lake to the south basin and have to pass through Pelican Point where there are probably 20 boats anchored and trolling. I slow down to 5 mph and ease on through. Off my port bow I see a brand new Fish-Rite cutting right in front of me doing about 25-30 mph. He's heading straight for the bouy that has the word "ROCKS" on it and he's about to hit. Amazingly he manages to miss all the rocks and realizes his mistake so he slows down and turns.. BAM the motor kicks up as he smacks a big old boulder. I called him on the radio to see if he was O.K. and he said he was.

So last week, I'm at our local metal and hardware store and this guy walks in and is needing a piece of 1-1/2 steel tube for a boat trailer. He had the mangled piece in hand and I asked him what happend. He said he got hung up on the ramp at Eagle Lake. Well of course I had to tell him about the Fish-Rite adding in that I thought the guy had all the electronics on but forgot to turn on the common sense.

So as I'm waliking out the door, he say's "By the way, thanks for the call out there, you were the only one that even bothered".

I told my brother about the coincidence and neither of us could believe the odds of that ever happening. Eagle Lake and it's steel head like trout is no secret but it's 300 miles away so not many folks in my area go there.
Go figure, I finally get to tell a really good story and the first outsider I tell it too is the guy that made it happen..

we all screw up.......in my opinion the only dumb mistakes are the ones we make time and time again........a lot of people dont pay attention once they get on the water---they scan the horizon and think its all clear and hit the gas........at least he didnt knock a hole in it.

It wasn't an I/O it was a OB Honda. I was impressed by how well the boat and motor took the hit. It was a pretty loud thud but little or no damage.

I think the guy was probably pretty level headed and just didn't see the bouy or thought that because a North River (jet) went through, he could too.
As for the ramp, there was more than one that week. I went off the first day when I launched but there was no problem feeling it. I was more careful when I pulled the boat out.

Maybe I'm just being sympathetic after making a joke out of someones misfortune... Nah..

Well, no, not really. He's a guy just like you and I who made a mistake and learned a lesson the hard way.
