Rod Holder Orientation???

I found a pair of stainless steel rod holders that I want to use to replace my old aluminum ones that are on my helm seat. The problem is, the new ones are larger that the old ones and they will not fit. I'd like to know if rod holders can be "effectively" mounted sideways? Will this cause a problem while trolling? Will it damage the rod? I'm an "island boy" and I don't use a fishing rod while fishing, but who knows I may want to move into the 20th/21st century soon.

That depends upon what you are trolling or fishing for. A big ol wahoo might come along and snatch that rod right out of a sideways rod holder!

My rod holders are mounted sideways. It helps to keep trolling and drifting lines apart. As long as your reel drags are set properly you won't have any problems. Reel drags should be set fairly loose. As the line is stripped from the reel the drag tightens automatically because of leverage on the spool. Good luck.
