I have installed store bought from fishing store . There are alot of diffewrant kinds go into any web site for fishing they almost all sell them.I have used pvc pipe and still do they work but will eventually crack .I recently changed two of them to galvanized pipe just drill in botom put bolt in so the pole is straight and wont turn on you. I put 2 on my transom with two U bolts with a small backing plate. Also use a safety line tied perhaps to a differant spot good luck. We also use what we call shot guns its a rod holder that will rotate for you toward fish.
