Rod "hole" location. 89 65 Johnson.

I didn't make any notes on dissasembly and now I don't know.
My book says the holes go upwards, but my rods have only one hole and it can either face the exhaust side or not? It can't face up.
Does it matter?
Can someone answer this?

Up or the intake side. Up allows puddled oil to lubricate, to the intake side allows oil coming in to lubricate. Not a huge deal, just a little added lubrication.
