UPDATE- So I went through and retraced all my wires using a voltmeter to ensure I had the right ones. I then reconnected everything. When I connected everything Tacs were working good and digital readings were strong in all of them. When I went to run trim- Starboard up wasn't working (both at the finger tip switches and thumb).

I went back and started checking voltage at the motor (see pic) and saw that my up voltage was fluctuating between 9-11 volts.

Went back to look at the tacs and try again and saw that the starboard tac stopped working. What the...???

Figured it had to be a short or something at that point so went back to motor and started jiggling around wires etc and see that the tac started working again. Went to check trim and it started working too!!!!!! Both working!!!! Went back to check wires at motor and then tac went out, trim stopped. I moved the wires again and started working....

So where do I go from here?? Suggestions? How to trouble shoot from this point?

Thank you in advance.

Logan

Well, after hours and hours of connecting and reconnecting I?ve decided to post this issue to see if anyone out there has an idea. I recently swapped out my (2) Mercs for (2) Yamaha HPDIs- 2003 150 HP.
LZ150TXRB
Z150TXRB

Upon install we realized that for some reason the thumb trim on the handle was only working the Starboard motor (attached is a photo of my controller). The two finger switches on the front of the cover housing are both working correctly. So for some reason the port motor isn?t going up with the starboard when the thumb switch is triggered.

I switched the plugs that come from the trim/tilt wires and splice into the main black power cables that run from the ignitions to the motors(see photo). When I did that, the thumb switch started working but the starboard tac stopped working (as well as the fuel management because it is linked to that ignition switch). It appears that for some reason when connected in this configuration the starboard ignition is not sending out auxiliary power.

I also notice that when I hook up the previously mentioned cable in the configuration that allows the tac to work but dis-enables the thumb switch that whenever I push the single starboard trim switch my starboard tac and fuel management gauges both blink on and off and they both appear noticeably dimmer than the port tac. Seems to me like there is a short somewhere, just not sure.

I have taken apart the entire wiring system (a few times now) and put it back together (nice and slow) ensuring that I am connecting port motor to port cables etc. I have also checked my grounds at the motors and battery terminals. Still getting this issue. I still think I have to be hooking something up incorrectly just not sure what.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Logan

Sounds like you have a connection problem on a pin where the wire is attached to the pin or could be not making good connection between male and female pins. Looks like you're going to have to check with an ohm meter while moving cable to locate.

check the female pins on the engine 10 pin main harness.
they may be spread out some and not making a connection.
the tach powerfeed is yellow and the trim powerfeed is red.
yellow is only hot with the key on red is constant hot.
check your voltage at the red ign connector wire when the issue is occuring.
use a paper clip to slip in the connector from the backside.
power for both circuits comes from the red wire in the 10 pin main harness.
loose connections will create both symptoms but at least your not dealing with a short circuit.

Thanks a lot guys, I appreciate your help. I will get out there and check it this week. I took the boat out yesterday and it ran perfect, the best it's run since we switched motors. Never once had the tac blank out and thumb trim / starboard "up" worked the entire time and that includes trailering and trimming engines all the way up and back down.

I want to identify the issue though and make a permanent fix so thanks again!
