I have a 95 Yamaha 175 on a 20’ Grady White 208. Thinking of buying a crate motor 200hp Yamaha 4-stroke and doing my own repower. Would do all new gauges, wiring harness, throttle controls and Teleflex hydraulic steering.

I currently do all my own 2-stroke and boat maintenance. Is this a project that can be reasonably done by someone who has mechanical experience but not a lot of outboard experience especially 4-stroke?

Will the 200 bolt on using the same transom mounting holes?

Is there tuning or other initial setup work that should be left to an experienced dealer?

Would doing my own install affect the warranty?

as far as the warrenty is concerned,if yamaha allos dealers to sell loose motors to consumers still in the crate yamaha has to warrenty it as long as it got properly registered. I just had a recent bttle with an F115 that smoked itself due to incorrect consumer setup.
the RTA seemed to think it was not yamaha isue and I pointed out as long as yamaha allows crate motor sales to the consumer it IS a yamaha problem. he had no option but to agree.
your 95 guages will not work with the four stroke. the harnes will but you may require an adapter. why not just bite the bullet and add 500 and make it all new and fresh.
the mounting hole pattern is the same.
my hope is that soon Yamaha will dissallow dealers to sell crate motors. the PDI sheets are supposed to be serialized to the engines for the 07 model run.
while its not difficult to properly set one up even most dealerships cant tell you how to test the alarm systems when done nor do most have the equipment to do it.

Rodbolt

Guess I was not clear on my post, I would plan on replacing everything, guages, harnes, steering and throttle controls.

Would it be reasonable to do the install myself then have a dealer do all the final tuning, tests and signoff?

sure, we do it all the time.
I dont mind someone bolting on the engine and pulling the rigging, it saves my time for real work.
I just prefer to make all the cable and wiring connections.
if your old 704 binnicle mount controls are in good shape the ign harness and controls can be reused. I prefer to replace the trim/alarm harness.
if your goung new 4 stroke look into the command link package. its simple and easy for wiring.
