Hi All,
I am thining of painting my boat but have quite a few questions before I even start to ask the stupid questions here and waste your time;)

Can someone plase point me to a thread with the method for roll and tip painting? I think OOPS had came up with a good method but I can't seem to find it.

On the same line of thinking do you think that is something that should be added to the sticky on top, I bet a lot of people would find it helpful

Thank in advance

Re: Roll and tip painting method ?

Tom roll and tip is actually pretty easy . You will need high density foam rollers . I get them in a 4" size in a 5 pack at Homie Desperate you will also need some foam brushes you can pick these up in packs as well. The method of doing it is to roll out a small section maybe 2' X 2' and then LIGHTLY with just the tip of the brush go over the area you just rolled then do the next section. You dont want to do this in direct HOT sunlight as the paint will start to set up quicker than you can tip it . Feel free to check out my Starcraft to see how the paint is comming along on mine in the link in my post ( theres 2 links one to my boat and one to the Starcraft get together ) the last 3 or 4 pages in my thread have the most recent paint updates . There are a few of us myself included in the Starcraft club who have put down the brush and are just roll and rolling we quit tipping and are getting good results.

Tom,
I'm not sure of the actual thread however a quick search should find it. You can also go the the Interlux paint site and there's something there I believe. YouTube I know has some videos on it. Depending on what your hull is made of or what you're going to paint, there are different types of paint for certain applications as well.
Most, if not all, of the marine paint manufacturers have some type of paint where "rolling and tipping" is an accepted method of application. It's really not that difficult. As with everything though, preparation is the key to a good finish.

Re: Roll and tip painting method ?

Hi All,
Thanks for the info and no problem on the highjack. I think this would be a pretty boring place if it was not for a highjack now and then :D all work no play well you know how the rest goes...

The boat I am thinking of painting is fiberglass and really not in too bad a shape. I have coumpounded and waxed it only to have to go back to almost what it was then I put penetrol on it and that helped longer than anything else.

What I really want to do is change it from the tan all over color to a Wheel Horse red color on the bottom and white on top. Wheel Horse red because that is the way I got the boat, I traded a Wheel Horse tractor for it ( boat has a good running 70 HP Johnson it it ) :D:D

Re: Roll and tip painting method ?

I think the brand of paint has a lot to do with it too.

I used Interlux Brightside. It actually took about 3 weeks to fully cure. Now its hard as a rock. Brightside has added flow and leveling chemicals. I can attest that they work very well after a beetle walked across the fresh paint leaving tracks in the paint. After disposing of the beetle, an hour later, the tracks leveled out. Gone. Nice paint.

I used foam rollers for marine paints, they are only about 1/4" foam on the tube. And the cheap 3" or 4" grey foam brushes. The rollers were 9" and I cut in half for use with the mini-roller. Be aware that foam rollers put down less paint than you might expect, and a lot less than a brush. So it will take more coats with a foam roller than brush.

Top looks like this after 1st coat:

After 3rd coat and a weeks dry time:

If you have not bought paint, I can recommend the interlux brand for ease of use, and also for being very forgiving. It does take longer for a complete cure than other brands.

Great info here guys... I've been debating a paint job for mine when she's ready (a long winter's work away).

I'm leaning towards painting my boat now, doesn't seem too much harder than anything else in restoring...

Painting is the easy part. Getting it ready to paint is a lot of work!

Seems like the top was in a constant state of sanding and fairing for months:

Re: Roll and tip painting method ?

also make sure that the paint you buy is a good one....dont cheap out and "just grab any ol marine paint"

stick to the tryed and tru brands....like awl grip/ brightsides or emmeron.

the paint i used on my boat was just carp !....it wouldnt level.......and because i used that paint.....any other i use on it will alligate.....that means im stuck with it....unless is sand it all off......and to get every speck off is really hard.

so....do your dilligence and read lots here....then buy a good paint.

there is instructions on the roll and tip method on the hull extension thread

Oooops you need to get rid of those bristle brushes and get some foam ones I think it will help in your situation as your paint looks great but you can see you used bristle brushes.

Re: Roll and tip painting method ?

Are you guys waiting the three weeks for the full cure to drop your boats in the water or can it be done sooner?

Re: Roll and tip painting method ?

You can put it in the water sooner, probably after just 2 or 3 days, depending on what brand you use. After a week you may still be able to press a groove in the paint with your fingernail.

Sitting in the full sun on a hot day will greatly improve the cure time. Drop a tarp over it after a few days and let it bake in the sun to really speed things up.
