I didn't want to hijack someone else's thread, so I started a new one.. and I want to thank Tail Gunner for a note he put in another thread about using a closed cell foam roller when doing the roll and tip method. I hadn't known that there was much difference in rollers and I rolled and tipped the cockpit of my boat... just put on a coat on the portion of the hull of the boat using a much better quality roller that I got from home depot today.. It doesn't say that it's "closed cell" I couldn't find one of those, but the one I got says that it's "extra fine foam" for smooth finishes...

Don't know where to find the closed cell roller or if this is one, but using a better quality roller made a huge difference - not such bad dimples with the paint. And I thought that my cockpit turned out ok with the cheapo roller...

If you got the same roller I did. It's the one with the blue handle. The rollers are white and they have refills right close to them 2 to a pack. I think they have them in 2", 4", and 6" or thereabout.

Is it the type of roller that uses a handle with a pin for the roller to ride on instead of a cage? If it is, did you have any problems with the foam deteriorating or breaking up because of the solvents in the paint?
If they held up you can bet I am trying them out on my next paint job. I have been driving across town to buy "solvent resistant" rollers. I can get the foam ones close by.

I've been using the white ones with the blue handle too. I haven't had any issues with them breaking down or anything else with epoxy or poly resin, they seem to work great.

I'll be using the same ones when I paint.

Only used them with epoxy so far, but I'm planning to use them for paint as well.

They didn't break up..yet. I tried to preserve it and I'll see how it does for the 2nd coat... I'm guessing that I should use it more as a disposable and just use a new one for the 2nd coat. I'll keep a close eye on it and see how it does.. if it barely starts to break up, I'll ditch it and start with a new one.. I think it was like $3.79 for the 2 pack of refills? I already had a handle, so I can't verify that it was blue. But is a white roller.

I don't want to lead anyone down the wrong path or anything (I'm a novice at the whole painting thing)... I'm just saying that the white roller did much better than the real cheap yellow ones that I'd bought from a dollar store :)
and that what you apply the paint with (as well as prep work) makes a huge difference..

I have been using this white roller from home depot too, they are high density rollers. I also found the refills in a 5 pack that a lot cheaper than the 2 pack, they're like 6 bucks for 5. I also buy the tan colored disposable pans in the 3 pack, I bought a ton of rollers & pans and just use new ones as I refill my paint:)

I've been using the white plastic pan liners for epoxy... if you let the epoxy harden, most of the time it comes out of the liner as a clear "skin" leaving the liner perfectly clean and re-useable.

That also lets me switch pans quickly, I can pull the liner out and set it aside to harden if needs be.
