split and cracked and falling off is a good sign. the black ones when they get old can leave a lot of marks on a white hull....thats pretty much why I changed mine to the nice purty blue ones.
usually when they get old they get rock hard and they dont really roll the boat off any longer the boast just kind of slides off . not an absolute reason to change them but that usually increases the black marks mentioned above.
changing them can get pricey though..you have alot more of those suckers than you think you do....I found factory blemished ones for only a couple dollars a piece but when you throw in new hog clips and those big washers it adds up FAST.
