I don't remember how I approached a wake caused by a large tour boat in Powell. It was a large 5' rolling wave and scared my girl riding in the bow yelling at me to slow down. I think I slowed down and rolled with it but don't remember. Regular wakes and waves in Powell I hit at 45 degrees, but with this, how would you approach it and with what speed? My boat is 22.5 ' long deep vee hull deckboat.

thanks

Re: rolling waves

I would go straight in... sometimes the wake boats make atleast 3 ft rolling waves and i go straight into them with my 16 ft and dont feel a thing.

Re: rolling waves

Good Question. I am curious what everyone's answers will be.

I was down on Delaware Bay outside of Wilmington, De. and had the stuffing scared out of me in a 16' Checkmate by a Tug pushing a barge upstream. It was rolling every bit of 5' and even going slow at a steep angle we rolled real bad and took some water over the bow. That was a couple hundred yards away from them by the way, but not far enough. It makes me worry cause I'd like to run further down the bay but not have to worry about that.
And HEY, what's the deal anyway I have run boats all over the upper Chesapeake and passed many of the same type arrangement, NAVY ships, Coast Guard, Cargo ships and NEVER been tossed around like that. Although the cargo ships in the C&D canal can get pretty bad.

Re: rolling waves

I usually slow down and reapply enough power to lift the bow ( especially an open one) so I don't get swamp and pass the wave on a slight angle
