Picked up a '69 Orlando 14' fiberglass with a 30hp Evinrude for a little song, dance and a tiny bit of green. I have been lurking here, searched the archives, but just dont come up with much info on the 30 hp. After a bit of scraping with the #1 tool (pocket knife) I THINK the number is 187301. Could use a bit more specific guidance in where to scrape next to find the #'s. Th motor runs well, (except for cutting out at WOT, will remove the checkball in the fuel line as suggested on this site.). Since devine providance has placed me with Warners Bayou 15 feet from my back door, I plan to get lots of use of boat, so I want to stay ahead of problems. Any advice is gratfully appreciated.

On a slightly different subject, I have run the boat with everything set as I bought it. It seems to me the back lip of the transom should not drag the water on acceleration like it does. Do I need to move the prop father away from the transom?

Thanks again, with a little help I may make it to "old salt".

theduck

Terry,Move prop closer to transom for better hole shot. But it may cause the bow to plow after it planes.
Are you running remote steering or tiller?
You may need to distribute the weight better.
If you intend to maintain your motor get a manual.
Available at NAPA,tab at the top of this page,
Amazon.com etc.
Model number doesnt seem right.(not an expert)
Usually appears on mounting bracket usually
numbers and letters With number indicating hp.
Number may appear on a soft plug in the power
head.

The cutting out at wot suggests a bad coil.

Re: Rookie with a Evinrude

Thanks steelespike. With a bit more scraping with #1 tool, I have uncovered this number: 15IN1 as well as 187304. The number on the plug in the power head is R8187660, as well as what looks like an "M" inside of a slanted square. The motor cover sez Evinrude 30. I noticed in a lot of the older posts send you to omc.com, but now it is Bombadier, and they have no help on IDing your motor. Corporate crap, don't fix your old motor, BUY A NEW ONE!!

Have followed all other post, even downloaded all of the web pages from http://www.marinshopen.se/guide/guide.htm, (which I will re-do in english and post), but still don't find squat about this paticular motor. Being Irish, the idea that I have a white elephant/only-one-built-parts-can't-be-had/one-year-production-russian-built motor is not outside the realm of possability.

I'll keep hunting, again, any help, or even a decent wild goose chase is much appreciated!!

fireman 757-Any quick checks with a VOM to test coil? Already checked/cleaned/tightened all grounds.

Re: Rookie with a Evinrude

The marinshopen web site is in swedish. Easy to understand for me as I am from Sweden. Can't find anything about a 30HP Evinrude and 1873...
There was a 1956 30HP but it wasn't white. I checked all models from 1940-1979. Maybe is is a russian made Evinrude!? Or a later than 1979? Then the model numbers look like this:
http://www.marinshopen.se/guide/omc/omc8098.htm

There was a 1967 18HP model numbers 18702 or 18703. But not 30HP.

Maybe there is a model number somewhere. Keep looking. Can't help you yet.

Hey Bear, thanks for the input, but just for clarification.....The phrase white elephant just indicates I may have an odd ball motor, it is actually blue in color. I have checked all the serial&model numbers that I can find, as well as made some inquires about possable factory racing, or expermintal, or propriatory for a short run boat/motor combo.

Again, thanks to all who have done the looking and for the mechanical suggestions.

:D
"Being Irish, the idea that I have a white elephant/only-one-built-parts-can't-be-had/one-year-production-russian-built motor is not outside the realm of possability."
I understood that, almost. White elephant too. But somehow I thougt it was white anyway. Of course it doesn't have to be white if it is a white elephant. :)

Anyway, do you have a picture of it. Can you post it here? (The picture must be on a website and linked from there.)
I think someone will be able to tell you what you have.

Good Luck!
