Hey list.

I'm an ex submariner who used to sit around the QM plot at 3 AM at about 500 feet under the water and talk about how my next tour of duty would be on a pontoon boat with a beer. Well, now I'm permanantly assigned to a 1997 20' lowe pontoon with a 70 Hp evinrude outboard, and I'm clueless.

If you folks have a little patience with me, could someone help me answer a few questions...

What the heck is a powerpack?

The throttle has a button next to it that the previous owner told me I had to hold down for a few seconds before I choked the engine and started it up. What does that button do?

What IS the right way to start an outboard that's been sitting for the winter? Can I do what I used to do to my old VW's and spray a little wd-40 or starter fluid to get it revving?

Thanks for your patience,
Help!

1st, get a factory service manual and learn how your motor works. What it looks like inside. How the fuel, electrical, and controls systems are set up and work.

'Mornin'Jimogeek,

FIRST & FOREMOST, DO NOT USE ETHER STARTING FLUID. It will wash the lube off of the internals and can cause motor death.

You'll want to get a manual ( check bootom of this page) and remove and clean the carbs. If you didn't stabilize the gas before she was put up for the winter, you've likely got varnish in 'em.

For winter storage, drain & refill lower unit (do search in this forum for info), stabilize the gas and "Fog" (again, do a search in this forum) the motor and you should be good to go.

Keep your steering cablr/rod clean and lubed.

Sorry, can't help with the "switch"

Enjoy our Boat & Beer. Thanx for your time under water. We appreciate and honor you for it.

Good Luck
HAVE FUN!
