I have a 1995 Four Winns with a 4.3 L OMC cobra and a cobra outdrive. It runs, shifts, and looks outstanding. When I am throttled up past halfway, the outdride creates a rooster tail. It's not a very refined rooster tail but it does throw alot of water into the air. Is this normal for the OMC cobra outdrives or do I have a problem?

This isn't unusual for a sterndrive. Did you just get this boat or is the rooster tail something this boat didn't make before?

Sounds like the OD is not all the way down and that means you are lsoing power when underway. You want a rooster tail get a jet.

With the OD all the way down a rooster is not usual.

I have a 1995 Four Winns Horizon 190 with 5.0 L OMC Cobra and I also have a rooster tail at all times, trimmed down all the way or trimmed up a little at speed, not a big rooster tail, but its there... never seemed to be a problem to me. During that year and previous year, four winns used a hull design with a stern which was supposed to mimic trim tabs, maybe this unusual hull design causes the rooster tail... Just a guess

Thanks for your comments..I just bought the boat in July, so It has always created the rooster tail. The trim is certainly all the way down when this rooster tail is created. I think the hull design probably does have everything to do with it. I will be out skiing this weekend and I will pay closer attention to where the rooster tail originates from. I will update then. Thanks again

Re: Rooster tail behind my OMC cobra outdrive

Every outboard and sterndrive I have ever driven or riden in created some amount of rooster tail. Its simply a matter of how far the prop sits below the water line and the hull design. This is why inboards are preferred for wake boarding, as the prop is down under the boat... thus no rooster tail.

We have a 95 four winns 190 Horizon 5.0 302 with an omc cobra outdrive.. We have had the boat for eleven years, always has a rooster tail when trimmed down, not a neat rooster tail either!! definately throws water! When we are WOT trimmed to perfect spot we have none!! she looks real pretty out the back:) we had friends with a 20 ft bayliner 5.0 305 with mercruiser outdrive it only had a rooster tail when he maxed her out. and it was a true neat rooster tail. totally different hull design. We agree its the hull! FYI We both have 21 SS props, and we always beat him out of the hole!! he eventually would get maybe 1mph on us but he did have a fourbarrel! And no i won't let the husband get the fourbarrel:)
