Ive got an older boat with a recently installed 1998 Johnson 60 and rotary (not sure of the correct name) steering. Im beginning to think Id rather go back to a motor that is more the vintage of the boat. Can I make a 1968 Johnson 55 connect to the push-pull?

Thanks.

I don't think push-pull ("stick") steering is a good idea with engines over about 40HP, but, yes, I think you can hook up a 1968 55HP Johnny to it.

Sorry, im probably using the wrong terminology for this steering. Whats it called? Its just the standard steering for this motor (1988 60hp Johnson).

Re: Push-Pull Steering - Older Outboard

when you say push-pull steering what do you mean? Do you mean that system with a pulley type thing in which you rotate forwards and backwards to go left and right? Thats what I think it means, but i may be wrong, (I'm not and expert). Or do you mean tiller steering? Or something else I've never even heard of? haha

I believe its called rotary steering. Yes, where the linkage moves left and right at the motor (shorter and longer).

does it have a steering wheel and a single cable that runs to the motor. or steering wheel with cables and pulleys. or does it have a stick like that you move to turn the wheel.top is cable pulley, 2nd stick steering, 3rd is rotary, 4 is rack.

It has a steering wheel and a single thick cable connecting to the motor. Based on the pictures its either rotary or rack, and I believe its rotary given that the unit under the steering wheel is a cylindrical shaped unit.

The older OB were designed for cable and pulley steering systems, but there are a number of options to adapt them to "teleflex" single - push pull cable systems.

One manufacturer of such mounting systems is T&R marine: http://www.trmarine.com/cats/mounts.html

You might want to read my Blog about what I had to do to adapt a 1965 OB to push-pull steering.. http://www.shareaproject.com/pages/projectTut,p,205,00.html

Keep in touch, this is not something lots of people have done.
