Is there a way to glue back loose magnets back to the rotor?I have to remove the rotor because of acirculating pump leak on Mercruiser 170 and I think some of them are loose. Thanks!

Re: Rotor magnets

Do you mean the magnets on the Balance wheel on the crank shaft where the alternater is? I think this engine may have had this... Trying to remove the bottom pully by tapping it with a hammer will knock the internal magnets loose.. I know, I did it once in the past...

Re: Rotor magnets

I had this happen before. I did glue it back in but you need to make sure that your polarity is correct with the magnets I belive.

Re: Rotor magnets

I managed today to pull out completely the rotor and found out that 3 of the magnets are loose ,but intact.Did a polarity test with a needle on a thread and found out that one of the magnets was installed the opposite way.I wonder was that done on purpose to prevent overcharging or is symply a mistake done by someone who repaired that engine before.I still look for a hint for a glue and the way that job has to be done.Thank you!

By the way, I think you mean Stator, not Rotor, if your talking about the "alternator", the Rotor is part of the ignition system.

On a 470 engine, the stator is the "Stationary" coils under the rotating pulley on the front of the engine known as a "Flywheel" by Mercruiser, and Rotor by some because it turns. It also has the magnets glued inside to make the alternator. It has nothing to do with the ignition system on the 470, however, the same system is used for outboards and IS used for the ignition, but again, not on the 470's.

Re: Rotor magnets

In the Clymer shop manual that I own that part of the alternator is called rotor. But I am sure you know what I`m talking about. My initial question was if anyone know what stuff is used for glueing the magnets to the inner surface of the rotor?Thank you!

Re: Rotor magnets

just take them out and pull the stator and undo the 2 yellow/red wires and the water cooled voltage regulator and put in a alt. conversion kit.... works great no more worries if your battery is charged or not.... lot less problems in the long run
