Rotted, waterlogged? what to do?

I bought a 93 glassport 20ft. It is similar to a hydrostream. When i looked at the boat i knew the seats needed to be replaced because they were severely rotted, faded and cracked. I thought that the floor was solid (feels solid). I bought some new seats and was going to put them in, but after inspecting further I realize now that the boat is waterlogged? I drilled into the floor and the wood is wet. Some areas of the stingers that i can see are not covered with fiber glass and i can push my finger into the wet rotted wood. I drilled in the other areas of the stringers and the wood is wet and smells moldy. Apparently all the wood must be saturated with water or most of it. I dont know what to do now. I paid 2800 for this boat. It has a 91 200hp yamaha with good compression mounted on the transom. I like the hull design (tunnel hull) but I dont really want a big project. I dont mind sticking some money into this, but I dont know if it is worth it. I dont have much time or the space to work on this myself. Should i just part this thing out and cut my loses? What needs to be done to repair? Input greatly appreciated

Sounds like it needs a major restoration (BIG PROJECT).
Pull the top off and replace ALL the wood including transom. Months and months worth of work.
If you don't have the time, space or drive cut your loses now.

Welcome to iBoats. Sorry it has to be under these terms that you you post first, but if it makes you feel any better, there are many who buy a boat and then find rot. No point in going over the things that you should have done..... You know now.

You say you don't want a project boat but like the hull design. If you are not up to fixing it, which can be done with all the great help here, you have a couple avenues.

1. Put it all up on ebay or part it out. You probably will not get what you paid for it though.
2. Find another hull that you like that is in good condition but missing the engine and do a swap. You can find them on Craig's list pretty frequently.

With some hard work, some basic tools (like a chain saw) and lots of reading in the restoration forum, you can tackle the job of replacing the stringers, floor and transom and any other rotted wood.

I would take everything off that's good on the boat, dump the hull and find a decent one, lots of them out there cheap

There are lots of "been there" folks here, so you're in good company! Mine wasn't quite so bad, but still a huge job that I hadn't bargained for when I bought my boat hastily and without knowing anything! No I love it though.

You can't pay to have the work done - costs waaaay more than the boat is worth. So your options are as has been discussed. The (potentially) good news for you is that IF that engine runs well it's worth quite a bit - you may not lose all that much $$$. here's a link to one on ebay (1993 Yamaha 200hp) tha went for $2,300 - some go for more.

If you haven't already, learn ebay because used boat parts fetch decent cash there. Craigslist is OK for heavy parts but eBay has 100000 times the aydience so more likely to find someone who needs what you have. Check ebay for any part you have before throwing it away - it's amazing what sells there! Radio, horn, seats (maybe not your if rotted),swim platform, hatch cover, any electronics, antennas, pumps, guages.....you get the idea.

Keep us posted. Good luck.

Re: Rotted, waterlogged? what to do?

I will attest to the statements above. I had to do the stringer/deck replacement too, and it a LOT of time. For the hours I put into it, I could have got a part time job and then used the money to buy a newer boat! But I would have not have felt the glass itch, use a lot of bad words, read all the posts here, etc. etc.

If you are up to spending hours of time and would like that feeling of accomplishment, tear it apart and get busy. If you want an easy and quick way to the lake, buy a newer hull and fit your engine to it. The decision is really what you are willing to do.

If you like the shape of the boat then do the work and fix it. You will be surprised how great it can be. When your finished you know it was done right.

But he doesn't have a place for that, and THAT can be a major pain in the a** :)

Look up Lanier Liquidators....Outside of Atlanta..and find a new hull. Theres a web page showing there inventory, you dont want to go there with what you have. Good Luck.
