I have a 1988 seswirl sable. The wood under the fiberglass is rotten. My intent is to remove the rotten wood leaving the fiberglass shell and putting 3/4 inch marine plywood on top of the fiberglass shell. I am going to prep the wood with KILZ first, screw the ne wood down and either fiberglass over it and paint with rough surface deck coat or just use the deck coat on top of the wood. Any suggestions on how I can improve what I am doing??

Re: Rotten boat deck

Go the the resto forum, those guys fix boats all the time but probably not like you want to.

If the deck is rotten there is a 99.9% chance that the stringers and transom are shot too.

Be a little more specific also, where is the wood rotten.

Rotten deck

I have a 1988 seswirl sable. The wood under the fiberglass is rotten on the main walking deck. I have remove some of the wood from under the fiberglass leaving the fiberglass in tact. The wood stringers under the wood/fiberglass appear to be undamaged.

Welcome to iBoats.
Don't want to rain on your parade but...
Boats usually rot from the bottom up. If your deck is this bad, I'd recommend you do a thorough inspection of the transom, stringers and motor mounts to ensure that your substructure is sound and not waterlogged and rotting. I think your boat has floatation foam and it could be water saturated as well and this can add hundreds of lbs of weight to your boat.

Re: Rotten deck

I took out the deck over the fuel tank and in the cuddy and the stringers are in good shape with no break in the gel or matt. That being said, I am really interested in whether my process to rebuild the deck is sound or do I need to go in another direction?

Re: Rotten boat deck

You need to read thru the threads listed in Don's how to's

The deck is probably hiding additional rotten wood.. As 5150 mentioned.

Lots of pix of the damage would be helpful too.....
