Flipped my boat over last night to prep for cleaning and sanding / polishing and came across these sweet mamma's...DSCN2116.jpg

Would I just pop these bad boys out and pop some new rivets in there?
Or should I really not worry about it?

Re: Rotten rivets?

Any recommendations on a rivet gun I should look into? I found a couple at BLowes and other rip off shops, and the just looked hokey and cheap...

Re: Rotten rivets?

What is the best method for polishing and sanding around the rivets... Realized last night I went over a few and gave them a little trim off the top... nothing major, just flattened them out a bit...

Wire brush, or a Dremmel tool?

Obviously I dont think I want to smooth them out with the rest of

thx

Re: Rotten rivets?

A soft stainless steel cup brush will get the job done. Use stainless because the microparticles comming off a plain old steel one will imbed themselve in the soft aluminum and later rust.

My preferred tool is a mini air die grinder with a green pad attachment. Harbor Freight sells them cheap but you'll need plenty of air to run those. If you need one anyway and have just been putting it off, get yourself a good Jet or something on that order. The air consumption difference alone will amaze you.

Home Depot sells the Husky brand and while a small step up from the HF stuff it's still junk.

I like a kinked wire cup brush for an angle grinder or drill. I don't worry too much about steel or stainless steel unless the aluminum is going to be welded, then it needs to be stainless.

Eye protection is a must when operating one of these in a power tool.

Re: Rotten rivets?

So I picked up a manual hand rivet gun today from harbor freight... came with a pack of rivets of various sizes... after popping a few in, I realized they didnt look like the rest, and had a little dimple on the top from where the stem was popped off...

Do closed end blind rivets not have that dimple?

[edit]

Oh, also... Do I need to go all aluminum, or can I use alum/steel rivets?
