I have an old boat ('74 Baja 16 footer outboard). I've heard several horror stories about rotten transoms. I was wondering how I would know if it's going bad. Thanks.

Re: rotten transom

pull up on the motor in an up and down motion and see if the transom flexs at all. if so you probably have a rotten or rotting transom

Re: rotten transom

one way is to stand on the anti ventilation plate and bounce a little, have somebody watch from the side and see if it flexes.

Also if you can stick your finger thru it, it is probably rotten.

Re: rotten transom

From the inside, drill a hole part way into the wood low on the transom. If the wood comes out wet/rotton, you have a problem brewing. If the wood drills out clean and dry, seal the hole up solid with resin and thank your lucky stars. Be careful you don't drill too deep unless you want to install another drain plug!
