I've got a 1986 Bayliner Capri 1950 with a VP AQ225e/275 that used to idle at 600RPM. For the last couple of seasons I can't get the engine to run anywhere under about 1200 RPMs. I've rebuilt the carb, a Quadrajet, and then replaced it with a pro rebuilt one, added a Pertronics electronic ignition and coil, wires, plugs, cap and rotor and bypassed the VP fuel filter. The ignition timing at 1200 RPM is about 30 degrees BTDC. If I set it back to spec., the engine dies. Theres strong vacuum at the carb pull off and the engine revs good and runs strong at high speed. I,ve searched the whole engine for a vacuum leak with carb cleaner and a stetoscope and can't find any thing wrong. Electric choke adjustments haven't helped and it seems like turning the idle mixture screws have no effect on the erratic and fast idle. I'm at my wits end and don't know where to look next. Thanks for any help you might provide!
