I have a 1986 Johnson 120 that idles fine but from 1000 - 2300 rpm it runs rough then it smooths back out as soon as RPMs get over 2300.

Where should I start?

Start with the basics. Has the motor sat for a while? Did it always do this or just start? Have the carbs been cleaned? What spark plugs? What oil and fuel? Fresh? Thermostats in or out? Airbox cover on?

Lotta homework, huh?

Geez. You too?

I was just about to post same thing. I have a 1989 120 on a Mako 17 I just bought last weekend. When I first took it out, I was a little underwhelmed at the power until 1 or mebbe 2 more cylinders decided to fire and woke me up. Acceleration just about threw me out of the boat. Took mebbe 10 seconds for me to finally reach the throttle while boat was airborne at 35 knots and accelerating (it was a lumpy day here on the Left Coast).

Engine's running fine at higher RPMs, smooth acceleration, no coughing, sneezing or runny nose typical of timing problems. Plugs are all correct and uniformly clean, but a little moist. At trolling and idle speed, engine runs rough. I've got fresh gas and oil in it, so I'm beginning to think, after I check timing and spark intensity, mebbe I need to look at the carbs.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Re: Rough from 1000-2300 rpm

It's used once every 2-3 weeks. It hasn't been running smoothly lately but the problem was erratic. Replaced a couple of plug wires that didn't have good continuity and the motor picked up. Carbs have not been cleaned since I bought it a year ago and I don't know about thermostat. Now that I have read more on the board I see that it should run the same RPMs on the muffs as on the water. I have to crank it upt to 1300 rpm muffs to get 650 RPM on water.

I'm guessing gummed and carboned up?
