My guess would be around a 1970 but it's severely weather beaten. If you can get the serial number off it that would be helpful.

Band colour would help, is it red or blue, the pic looks like it was taken with a camera from the 60's :p

Looks like a blue band Merc so it would be at least late 70s. The cowling lettering looks like early 80s actually.

Red band stopped in 69 I believe, blue continued in 70.

1973 or newer as it got the capped throttle handle, prior 72 has solid twist grip...

Thanks, its was a kicker on a guys boat, sold the boat and kept the motor in his garage. he says it has great compression (ill check) he only wants $300-350. so im going to buy it to sell again.

Be careful. It could be badly corroded internally going by the looks of it.

Why do you think that? it just looks as if someone ran aground with it and scraped off paint

If it was shiny and slick--you'd get way different opinions as to the condition and running of it.Most folks just take a tad better care than others when it comes to $$ items.I have a 76 Mariner all scuffed up from po--runs like champ! :D

Re: rough guess on year of outboard?

I bought one of these about 15 years ago that was always used in salt water. Only paid $150. Could not get it apart to change the impeller so I ran it until it seized up. Got about 6 seasons out of it and then sold it for parts for $50. Was a good motor all that time.
Good luck to you with it.

I'm not saying it for sure is corroded. I only raised the possibility going by the looks of it. It seems to have seen so much salt that we had a hard time telling if it was a red band or blue. Also, look at the upper part of the lower unit and over the cavitation plate. It looks corroded and that part did not run aground.

Your buying it to resell for a profit. In that case, who cares what you buy, knock yourself out.
