Rough idle problem

Hi guys I can't seem to figure out why my boat won't idle right. I put it in the water and idle out of the harbor fine then I do 25 knots or so out to the fishing hole and start to troll. While I'm trolling it coughs and stalls out every 5 min. or so. In the driveway with the muffs it idles with out stalling but it still sounds a little rough. It has new points condenser cap rotor and plugs. It sat for two years with a full tank of gas so I ran it out and put a full tank of 92 octane in it with no difference. It has a Rochester 2 jet. Thanks

Re: Rough idle problem

hi erichy

did you change the filters and water seperator?

might be worth a carb clean up - and resetting the 2 idle mix screws on carb body.

good luck

cheers

Re: Rough idle problem

Thanks I'll go get a water separator and filter Thursday. How do I set the mixture screws?

Re: Rough idle problem

Well after changing and rebuilding the entire boat to figure out the problem it was a screw inside the distributor. I took the distributor apart and found two set screws banging around bending the flyweights and holding them open sometimes and closed other times making troubleshooting a pain to say the least. So now no more fouling plugs, rough idle, no power, etc. I'm glad I found the problem but wish it was sooner. Hopefully this will save someone the trouble I had.
