I have a 14 foot 1991 bayskiff ( looks exactly like a Carolina skiff, same mold)

it has a flat bottom and a flat deck. there are no holes in the deck. I want to run the cables from the center console, under the deck without cutting any more holes than I have to.

which way do the hull/deck braces run, front to back or side to side.

i want to make my first hole under the center console so the patch won't show.

any advice?

they usually run front to back. but there is nothing say there isn't a cross brace in there, or that it is full of foam. usually they cut a 6" hole and put a access hatch ring around it for cables and don't patch the hole. it is a pita to run the cables , even when the boat is prepare for it.

You can try what you want but Carolina Skiffs were designed for "on the floor" wire routing not for under deck. Also CS's flat bottomed boats had glass supports running laterally, not lengthwise under the deck. Personally, if it is exactly like a CS it would be a real tough job to do it right as there are no voids beneath the deck. It's "full" of foam.

CS's built their flat bottom series with cable/wire covers fixed to the deck. Not pretty, but functional considering the "no void" under deck design.
Hope this helps. :)

Bill beat me to it, i was going to say the same thing. CS on the flat bottom series uses a foam filled floor, between the floor you stand on and the bottom of the boat there is about 6" of foam. And like he said there is a fiberglass or PVC type wire mold thing that is glued/epoxied to the floor that the wires fuel lines/ stering cables run through under. It kind of like looks like one of those rubber things you have in schools/offices/stores to put over an extention cord so people don't trip or catch their feet on it. Go to CS website you can probably see what we are talking about on the i think (DX) series.

thanks for your help.

If I decide to try to run the cables underneath at least I know what I'm getting into.

is it just foam or are there fiberglass cross members under the deck?

"is it just foam or are there fiberglass cross members under the deck?"

CS's do have hard (fiberglass or other synthetic) crossmembers to add structural rigidity to the hull. From the pictures I have seen there are many of them spaced close enough to cause real problems if you tried to go under the deck with anything. They are meant to be undisturbed.:)

I have a 1991 17' Bay Skiff, the stringers run from front to back, but there are a couple ran across for added support. I asked the guy that did my floor if he could run the cables under the deck. He told me he didnt recommend it so, my cables are on the corner ran to the back.

I have not seen to many people with bay skiff's, lots of Carolina Skiff's though.

We don't even have a Carolina Skiff forum on this site. I asked for one but nothing yet.:(
