Row Boat Transom

Well I picked up a little 12 foot aluminum for doing some fishing this summer, but the previous owners somewhere along the line goofed up the transom, so it basically does not have one right now, just the aluminum skin. The boat came with a nice 9.9 mercury tiller steer motor that I would like to use on it, but am in need of ideas on how to repair the transom so it can handle the motor, what I took off of it was two small pieces of 1/2 inch plywood and I was not comfortable that it would handle the motor. So I am in need of an idea or two on how to put it back together. My thought was to use a sealed 2"x6" piece across the back and put a cap on the top of the wood.

Thoughts?

Re: Row Boat Transom

i am doing/ just redid my transom in my 14~15 foot princecraft, got rid of the plywood and went to oak instead. Outside i used a sheet of 1/4 aluminum a buddy of mine scored for me, and this is what the inside looks like now ...........

does this help at all???? I would probably use some cardboard for a template, and then go from there???

whatever you do, do NOT use pressure treated wood at all, the new stuff they put in it has copper, which will eat at the aluminum rather quickly.

you would be better off with marine plywood, AC3 or the such.............

and remember to use 5200 on all screws going through the transom, so there is no rot or leeks that way. and lose the black metal bars too, the 9.9 should make you move nicely and get to plane quickly .............

Yes, Thanks, the black bars are definitely going to go, they had those bolted through the thin plywood they had and as you can see attached to the rear seat, the patterned on the back of the boat with the black outline shows what the 1/2 plywood was cut to. Thanks again.

Re: Row Boat Transom

Here is what I did years ago on my 14' starcraft and then I capped the transom with aluminum angle http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=63672&highlight=starcraft

Now last summer I re-did the same transom (No pic's) and raised the center 1" to match the OB shaft better but used the same design.

The wood was notched where the knee brace was to accommodate the size.

I get the feeling that transom is supposed to be sandwiched between to pieces of wood like the gunwales.

I'd use 2 pieces of 3/4" ply. Inside down to the top of the center brace, flat/level across the bottom and cut to the contour of the transom on top. Outside, flat level on the bottom with the bottom 6-8" below the lowest point of the metal and cut to the contour on top just like the inside. Seal with 4 coats of exterior grade Spar urethane and thru bolt together with SS hardware.
