I don't know which 5.0 merc you have, 260hp would make it an mpi? Is it a new engine?
If not, your max rpm should be from 4400 to 4800 at wide open throttle.

Re: RPM question?

I guess you would first have to find out what model engine you actually have. There were 2 models of the 305 in 78 and 79. The 898 (198 hp 2bbl carb) or the 228 (228hp 4bbl carb) the only 260 hp engine was a 350 Chevy.
Assuming you actually do have a 305, the WOT (Wide Open Throttle) rpms for the 898 is 3800 -4200, the 228 is 4200 - 4600.
