RPM question

I have a 10 HP Evinrude Sportwin that supposedly runs at 4500 RPM. How can I verify that it is running at that (or close to that) speed? I have a very difficult time telling if the throttle is wide open and I have no tach. My GPS shows about 9.5 max MPH with 2 people and gear in a Starcraft 15' Kingfisher. Does that sound right? The prop is stock.

Thanks

Re: RPM question

not 100% sure, but 4500 sounds low... think it's
supposed to be 5500rpms? to know for sure, install
a tach. reccomend a "tiny tach" for about $35,
hooks to one plug wire and ground and keeps engine
hrs. too.
good luck,
M.Y.

Re: RPM question

I don't see a year mentioned on that engine. The top rated rpms on the older OMC engines are 4800 rpm. It changes from year to year.

Re: RPM question

According to the Evinrude site shown here in other threads (it's a german site) the max RPM is 4500.

The motor is a 1962/1963 (depends on who looks it up)
