I have a 1998 Larson 176. What should Max RPM's be? I brought it up to almost WOT and it was at 4900, so I backed down to 4500. I can run comfortably at 3500 doing about 30 but sometimes I like to drop the hammer.

4200 to 4600 rpm for WOT rpm.

Would that mean I need a different Prop?

If the tach is correct, yes, you need a different prop.

Might want to post in the Prop forum if your tach checks out.

If I keep the prop on and just dont go over 4600 rpm's would I do any damage to anything?

Thanks,
Erick

Nope,............ But if it Is Right,.... I'd change it Soon....

The Tach is checked by running it against a Shop Tach used for tune-ups,+ Comparing the readings..........

RPM's for a 3.0L Volvo Penta. Tach bounces above 4k

1999 four winns
I seem to have a similar issue with my Volvo. The tach reads steady and true (have not checked against a shop gauge as of yet) up to about 4k. The WOT is (IAW manual) in the 4200-4600 range but when I get into the higher rpms the tach no longer holds steady. It's not a rapid bounce just a steady sort of wander of about 1k RPM up and down. I do not hear any significant changes in engine pitch or tone so I don't believe that the motor is actually going up to 5500. In fact, 4500 and 5500 sound exactly the same. Any advice.

BTW Don S you have saved me a significant amount of money in labor on my boat through your posts. Keep up the good work.

Re: RPM's for a 3.0L Volvo Penta

Hi All
I am new to a fiberglass boat. Just bought a 1999 Four Winns H180 with a volvo 3.0. On first ride boat does 37mph at 4600 rpm. Sounds and feels good but thought it would go a little faster. The boat came with a spare never used prop 14-?x19.Changed props and now 32mph and rpm is 4800.So back to other which is 14?x21. Wondering if this is top speed for this boat not that I cruise at that speed often. I have been reading these forums for a few days now and like what I read so far.

You guys should start your own posts instead of hijacking 2 year old posts. You'll get much better feedback ;)
