RPM's rev befor shifting in reverse 79 200HP

My 1979 merc 200 hp came back from the shop and when i shift to reverse the engine revs real high before reverse kicks in. The mechanic ( i call him that because Tech sounds like someone who knows what they are doing ) sed he tried to adjust it but seems to him like SOMETHING is wore out, anyone know watt something might be ?

first thing I would do is to disconnect shift<br />cable and try to shift manually into reverse.<br />this will rule out problems with shift cable.<br />good luck,<br />M.Y.
