Rpm's

How can I tell what rpm's I am running if my boat does not have a tach. I do have a timing light with a tach on it but I think that it only works on 4 stroke motors because when I hooked it up last night it read 7K-8K and there is no way the motor was spinning that fast. Thanks

Without a tach in the boat you would have to have a induction tach or some other type of test tach
