Started my engine this morning on the driveway, and on the hose. The motor was not run at all last year, other priorities. The motor idled at 1500 rpms, I know that there is a difference when you run the motor on the hose as opposed to in an actual body of water, ( restriction at the prop). I seem to remember reading that the motor should idle under load, somewhere around 700-900 rpms.or was I having a "seniors" moment. I plan on taking the boat out on a nearby lake tomorrow for a quick run just to get the "cobwebs" out, and to make sure everything is running okay. The motor is a 1980-140hp Johnson.

Re: RPM's

Idle is always properly set in the water, in gear @ 650 to 700 RPM. Will always idle higher on hose due to lack of backpressure.

Absolutely. Idle should be set in the water and not on the muffs.

Re: RPM's

an engine on a hose will idle higher but even on a hose 1500 sounds a little high. like the other guy said 650-700 in gear on the water. not in gear in water should probably be somewhere around 800-900. for a hose to add 600 rps sounds a bit high. i would take a garbage can or a big storage bin, stick it under the lower unit fill it with water then see where you idle. eliminate the hose pressure. just dont put it in gear.

Re: RPM's

or better yet just dump it in the water and see what happens.
