What a weekend! Aside from watching a couple of very very large people tip over in a canoe 4X....

2 guys out in a very nice Starcraft bow rider with a big 115 4-stroke Honda on the back.

They were coming into dock and I guess figured the best way to slow down would be to throw it in reverse and gun her.

Wow!

The engine flopped up into the air... revved really high... dropped down and RRRRRRRRRRRRIPPP!

The entire engine dropped out of sight... died.... and then the boat began to plunge backwards and take on water. It took most of the transom with it. The guys were stunned. I don;t think it was their boat. I think they borrowed it possibly because after they laughed with the guy helping them drag it out onto shore from underwater... good thiung it was only in about 3 feet of water. but man. What a sight.

I guess a boat doesn;t have to be too old to have transom rot :)

I agve them one of the pamphlets in my boat documents for Seacast :)

P.S. I would have tried the rooster tail soup can this weekend.. but I was busy trying to get it to plane!

Re: Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrip!

Going back up in 2 weeks so may get to test the tail.

Lots of jet skiers out there this weekend. And an elderly couple out there with a really small sporty boat with a 90 on the back that was absolutely flying.

I wounder if you could devise a funnel for a really small tomato paste can that widens out on the IN end. That small of a can may make an impressive tail. I have a bunch of cans ready to go. Didn't bring them up with me this weekend though.

Going from Tomato Juice right down to Tomato Paste.

"red bull" can may be neat too. Longer can may affect the tail.

Wow i have done the same thing with my boat, trying to slow down by the dock and not locking the engine down but it didn't rip off the transom. Scared the sh!t out of me though i didn't know what that loud noise was for a second. I will have to be more careful at the time i never thought that could happen. Makes you wonder if it was weak or rotted.

I Imagine it is rotted. I wouldn;t think the engine could have ripped it off if it wasn;t.

Was certainly a sight. I was worried at first... then laughed when I saw it all happened. I had to. It was an amazing sight. Nice silver engine jumping up... then down.. CRUNCH! Man.

I haven't had the engine jump out yet.... Maybe soon.

Re: Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrip!

My cousin bought his 1st boat without knowing what to look for and on his maiden voyage he took his girlfriend out for a nice cruise. They spotted a sandy beach and he trimmed the motor up and pulled up onto it. As they lounged on the beach, the tilt/trim rams leaked down which slowly lowered the 85hp Johnson to where it was touching the bottom. The wave action rocked the boat and the caulk/paint work the previous owner did to conceal the transom damage split and allowed the motor to flop to and fro.

His girlfriend was the one who noticed it. The boat took on water and he said he felt lucky to get back without the motor coming completely off. Once he really inspected it, he said there was nothing but rotting wood and broken fiberglass.

Caveat emptor.

Re: Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrip!

There is a boat down the road I went to look at to buy.

Moved the engine a bit and the holes for the bolts turned into a faucet. You can wobble the transom back and forth with the engine on it. He was asking 700 with trailer and motor. 28hp Evinrude Speeditwin that has no controls or tank. The floor is covered with huge holes, the wiring is all bunged up....

I offered him $250 for the whole setup. (Wanted the deep V hull for Lake Ontario)

For some reason he din;t take it. :(

Oh well. Best to just be happy with what I got. Besides. My little car has enough trouble pulling my Lonestar around :)
