Rub Rail insert installation problems

I soaked my new rub rail insert in a tub of hot water to get it nice and soft. I used a screw driver and rubber mallet to pry it in place. I am having such a difficult time that it took me a couple hours to make it 10-15 feet of a total of 46 feet that need to be installed. My problem is that the insert hardened back up since it is taking me so long. Does anyone have any tips on installing an insert? Is it always such a pain in the butt or am I using a wrong technique? Below is a link to the type of insert that I have.

Could try using a hairdryer or heat gun to soften as you go.

There was a thread some time back where a guy was using a spline tool for screen that is used in windowsand doors and such. H e claimed it worked better than anything else he had tried! Good luck!!
